St. Bonaventure center Osun Osunniyi’s status for St. Bonaventure’s game against Rhode Island on Saturday is questionable, according to a team source.
The 6-foot-10 Osunniyi did not participate in practice on Tuesday and did not travel with the Bonnies to Dayton for Wednesday’s game. Osunniyi suffered a concussion during last Wednesday’s win over UMass, with no set timetable for his return.
Osunniyi was the second Bona player to enter concussion protocol in a three-week span, as Jaren English missed the first two games of A-10 play with concussion symptoms.
The Bonnies have missed their big man after enduring back-to-back blowout losses at VCU and Dayton in their most difficult two-game stretch of the season. An Osunniyi return would be significant against Rhody and forward Cyril Langevine, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound senior who averages 9.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.
St. Bonaventure has not lost this season when Osunniyi plays 18 minutes or more. The Bonnies are 1-5 when he is not available to play, with the lone win coming against Rutgers in Toronto on Nov. 16.
As is old hat in this era of St. Bonaventure basketball, fans will keep a keen eye on warmups in the Reilly Center to see if their star is suited up.
