St. Bonaventure is planning to redshirt freshman forward Anouar Mellouk, the program confirmed Wednesday.

Mellouk, who hails from Amsterdam and joined Dutch countryman and best friend Joryam Saizonou at Bona, played two seasons at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia prior to enrolling at SBU. Mellouk averaged 15.4 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and 1.2 steals per game for Fork Union’s postgraduate team in 2020-21 and committed to Bona in June.

Still relatively new to the game, Mellouk began playing basketball just five years ago, according to Bonaventure’s athletic communications staff. He mentioned in an interview with PrepHoops.com last November that he was working on his ball handling and basketball IQ “because I started playing basketball late.”

As long as Mellouk retains his NCAA redshirt status, he will have four years of eligibility beginning in the 2022-23 season. Bonnies guard Brett Rumpel is also redshirting this season.
