St. Bonaventure senior Kyle Lofton has been named to the preseason Bob Cousy Award watch list, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Monday.
Twenty Division I point guards were named as candidates for the honor, which is awarded to the country’s top floor general. A national committee of college basketball personnel determined the watch list.
The award was named for Cousy, a Naismith Hall of Famer who played for Holy Cross from 1946-50 and led the Crusaders to the 1947 NCAA Championship. Illinois guard Ayo Dosunmu is the most recent recipient, while NBA stars Ja Morant and Kemba Walker also won the award in their college careers. St. Joseph’s legend Jameer Nelson is the Atlantic 10 Conference’s last winner, in 2004.
Lofton averaged 14.4 points and 5.5 assists a game last season, earning a spot on the Atlantic 10 First Team and helping lead the Bonnies to the NCAA Tournament. He was one of the nation’s minutes played leaders, averaging 38.4 minutes per contest.
The Hillside, N.J. native follows his predecessor, Jaylen Adams, in making the Cousy watch list before his senior season. Lofton was immediately inserted as SBU’s starting point guard the season after Adams’s graduation.
