St. Bonaventure has been the program most interested, most proactive in its pursuit of Binghamton native Brett Rumpel since the NCAA lifted its dead period and allowed in-person campus visits for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Bona reaped the benefits of that effort Thursday evening, when Rumpel not only committed to SBU but chose to forgo a prep year at SPIRE Institute to join the class of 2021.
Rumpel, who attended Seton Catholic High School and played AAU for Albany City Rocks, visited the Bonaventure campus on June 15. He scored 364 points in just eight high school games last season. He averaged 34.9 points per game as a junior, leading the Saints to a 2020 sectional title.
Rumpel held offers from fellow Atlantic 10 members Fordham and George Washington, with recent interest from Florida, New Mexico, South Carolina and Virginia Tech, among others. He ultimately chose to develop at SBU and learn from Mark Schmidt’s bench rather than see how high his recruiting stock could climb.
St. Bonaventure’s 2021-22 scholarship roster is now full.
