The St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team won’t be visiting UMass during Atlantic 10 play this season, but Mark Schmidt will still lead his team into his home state. A source confirmed Wednesday that the Bonnies will visit Northeastern as part of their non-conference schedule, opening a home-and-home series with the Huskies at Matthews Arena in Boston. The Bonnies will host Northeastern at the Reilly Center during the 2022-23 season.
Bona believes the Huskies, who compiled an 8-2 Colonial Athletic Association record in 2020-21 and defeated William & Mary in the first round of the CAA Tournament before falling to Drexel, could represent a Quadrant 2 opportunity on its NCAA Tournament résumé. The Huskies return four of their five starters, including redshirt senior Shaquille Walters, who produced 10.5 points a game and shot over 38 percent from 3-point range last season. Jahmyl Telfort, that group’s sixth man, is the leading returning scorer after averaging 11.8 points a night.
Northeastern coach Bill Coen owns 251 career wins, most in Husky history. One of those wins came against SBU on Dec. 21, 2018, with a team that eventually won 23 games and lost to Kansas in the NCAA Tournament. The Bonnies got the best of NU a year earlier, prevailing 84-65 at the Reilly Center.
