The St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team is the Atlantic 10’s outright regular season champion for the first time in its history.
The Bonnies, 11-3 in conference play, didn’t have to wait for Monday night’s regular season finale to clinch the feat. The Davidson Wildcats’ victory over VCU on Saturday ensures that VCU cannot earn a share of the title. Bona will finish with the top record regardless of Monday’s result.
SBU also clinched the top seed in next week’s A-10 Tournament and will meet the No. 8 or No. 9 seed in the quarterfinal round on Friday at 11 a.m. in Richmond’s Robins Center.
St. Bonaventure shared the regular season title with Dayton and VCU in 2015-16, with each team finishing 14-4.
“We can’t worry about anybody else. You’ve just gotta take care of your business,” Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt said after Friday’s 47-point win over George Washington. “And if you take care of your business, then everything’s fine.”
The Bonnies can say they’ve taken care of their business, winning all eight of their home games and suffering just one double-digit defeat all season. Bona closes the regular season against Dayton on Monday at 5 p.m.
