NEW YORK, N.Y. – Providence shot 62 percent from the field and made nine of 10 3-point attempts in a 90-63 win over Saint Louis Friday night in the championship game of the 2K Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project.
It was the first loss of the year for the Billikens, who fall to 3-1. Providence improves to 3-1.
Javon Bess, who was named the All-Tournament Team, led the Billikens with 16 points thanks in part to 8-of-9 shooting from the charity stripe. Davell Roby added 14 points thanks to three 3-pointers and a 5-of-6 effort from the line.
Hasahn French pulled down 11 rebounds and scored eight points for SLU. D.J. Foreman hit all four of his shots from the floor and finished with eight points and five rebounds.
It was a back-and-forth game at the start, with Saint Louis grabbing a four-point lead five minutes into the contest. An Aaron Hines jumper at the 12:17 mark of the first half put SLU on top 12-11, but Providence responded with a 3-pointer and grabbed a lead it would not relinquish.
The Friars ended the first half on a 13-2 run and took a 20-point lead into the break (41-21), and expanded their cushion in the second half and ended up winning by 27 (90-63).
The Billikens return to Chaifetz Arena Wednesday, Nov. 22, to face Detroit Mercy in a 7 p.m. tip. The game will be televised on FOX Sports Midwest.
