LAKEPOINT, Ga. – For the second time already this year, FGCU guard Brandon Goodwin has been named the ASUN Men’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week, league officials announced Monday afternoon.
Goodwin (Norcross, Ga./UCF/Norcross HS) averaged 16 points, three assists and 2.5 rebounds per game, helping lead the Eagles to a pair of wins over Siena and FIU to extend their winning streak to six in a row.
The redshirt junior began the week with 14 points and three assists in a 73-69 victory over Siena on Friday. He followed it up with a team-best 18 points on Sunday in an 82-63 rout of cross-state foe FIU. It marked the sixth time through the first 10 games of the year that Goodwin has led, or tied, FGCU in scoring, and has reached double-figure points nine times.
The 6-2 guard shot an impressive 75 percent (12-16) from the floor over the two contests, going 5-5 against the Saints and 7-11 opposite the Panthers, including a 3-5 performance from 3-point range.
Goodwin is the first player in the ASUN this season to be honored twice with a weekly award. The first came on Nov. 21 following three-straight contests in which he led, or tied, FGCU in scoring versus UT Arlington, Baylor and Michigan State.
Through nearly a third of the regular season, the UCF transfer is leading a deep and talented FGCU roster with 15.6 points per game to rank 8th in the ASUN, and also paces the Eagles with 3.6 assists per outing.
Goodwin is shooting 54.1 percent from the floor, helping lead an extremely efficient FGCU attack as the Eagles rank 5th in the nation with a team field goal percentage of 52.4. The Green and Blue is shooting 41.9 percent from 3-point range – 9th-best in the country – and is also limiting opponents to only 25.5 percent from 3-point range to rank 5th in the nation.
FGCU (7-3) is ranked #16 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Poll, with a new poll being released later on Monday. The Eagles – who have already played three top-20 RPI opponents and gone 1-2 versus the group – have won six-straight non-conference games for the first time in their Division-I program history (2007-08). Over the past four games, FGCU has trailed for a total of 2 minutes.
The Eagles will play their third home game in five days Tuesday when they face Georgia Southern (4-5) for the second time in 10 days at 7 p.m. inside Alico Arena. The two sides met in Statesboro, Ga., last Sunday, with FGCU claiming an 85-82 win despite being up by 17 points late in the 2nd half. Georgia Southern dropped an 86-49 decision at Minnesota on Friday night in its only game between the two with the Eagles.
