ROCHESTER, NY – Rochester Red Wings outfielder Adam Brett Walker has been named International League Batter of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Walker led all minor leaguers with five home runs during the week including a career-high three on May 21 at Durham. Two days prior, the Jacksonville University product had a two-homer game against the Bulls. Walker led the International League with 22 total bases, a 1.1000 slugging percentage and a 1.580 OPS for the period beginning May 16. He batted .350 (7-for-20) with seven RBI and six runs scored in six games during the week.
In homering three times on May 21, Walker became the first Red Wing to hit three home runs in one game since Leo Gomez on April 9, 1990 at Pawtucket. It marked the 14th occurrence in franchise history but only the second in the last 40 years. Walker is the first to go deep three times in one game in the International League this season. Matt Tuiasosopo (August 7, for Charlotte vs. Rochester) and Richie Shaffer (June 12, for Durham at Louisville) accomplished the feat last season.
Walker is batting .234 with four doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 18 RBI in 36 games this season. His nine home runs are tied for the league lead.
Walker is the second Red Wing to earn a league award this season after left-hander Andrew Albers was honored as Pitcher of the Week last week. Rochester had eight players receive weekly league awards last season.
