All that is good with Atlantic 10 men’s basketball.
Jones, Anthony earn weekly awards
NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The Atlantic 10 named Carl Jones of Saint Joseph’s its men’s basketball Player of the Week while Richmond’s Kendall Anthony was tabbed Rookie of the Week. Both awards were announced Monday for games played during the week of Nov. 14-20.
Jones, a junior guard from Garfield Heights, Ohio, was named to the Charleston Classic All-Tournament Team for leading the Hawks to a 2-1 record in the three-day event. Jones, who averaged 26.0 points in the three games, set a tournament single-game scoring record with 38 points against Seton Hall. The 38 points equaled the most points scored in the Atlantic 10 this season and ranks second in the nation. Jones shot 60 percent from the field in the three games, including 70.6 versus Seton Hall. He was 8-for-12 from beyond the arc during the week and was nearly perfect at the line, hitting 22-of-23. Jones added 3.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game.
From the Game Notes:
Just Give Him Two
Andrew Nicholson ranks second behind Bona legend and Naismith Hall of Famer Bob Lanier with a .575 (605-1052) career field goal percentage that includes a 7-for-28 showing from beyond the 3-point line. Excluding the 3-pointers, Nicholson’s career field goal percentage is an absurd .584 (598-1024)!
Explorers Getting Defensive
Through three games, La Salle is holding opponents to 39.4% shooting from the field and 29.8% from three-point range. As a comparison, last year those numbers were 44.9% from the field and 35.7% from three.
Temple Tournament Tidbits
Temple has competed in a total of 55 regular-season tournaments,
capturing 14 titles while compiling an overall record of 80-65 (.552). This is the fourth straight year that Temple has competed in a regular season tournament (other then the preseason NIT). The last time Temple won a regular-season tournament was the 1998 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic when the Owls defeated Southern (87-47) and Mississippi (70-61).
Billikens Global Appeal
The Billiken roster is comprised of players representing five countries and six states. The foreign countries represented are Australia (Cody Ellis), Canada (Grandy Glaze), Greece (Emmanuel Tselentakis) and New Zealand (Rob Loe).

The backcourt combination of Carl Jones and Langston Galloway accounted for 45 percent of them Hawks’ scoring last year (966 points) and made 57 percent of SJU’s three-‐point field goals. Together, the pair took 41 percent of SJU’s field goal attempts and 49 percent of the Hawks’ three-‐point attempts.
Triple-Double number one
T.J. McConnell, who helped Duquesne to a Friday win, turned in a triple-double. McConnell had 15 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists to register the second triple-double in Dukes history. There were three triple-doubles in the A-10 last year: two by Xavier’s Tu Holloway and one by Rhode Island’s Delroy James.
Fordham first in three-pointers
Did you know???? Fordham was the first team in the NCAA to use the three-point shot? The fi rst time a three-point shot was used experimentally in a game was on February 7, 1945 when Columbia defeated Fordham, 73-58. The three-point line was set at 21 feet from the basket and Columbia scored 11 “long goals” to Fordham’s nine. Also, free throwers had an option to take their shots from the regular 15-foot distance for one point or from 21 feet for two points. Eight “long fouls” were made during the game. The game also featured a 12-foot wide free throw lane, a move that would
be adopted by the NCAA eleven years later

Gaston rebounds both on and off the court
The tattoo on Chris Gaston’s chest reads “God Blessed.” The scars on his right elbow and the knot on his shoulder are the physical manifestations of the night that won’t leave him.
The scars escape the cover of his basketball jersey, reminders of a decision he never should have made, and vows never to make again.
Pecora enjoys the flavor of Rose Hill
Nearly a year has passed, but Tom Pecora still gets goose bumps when he recalls the moment. His Fordham Rams had just rallied from 21 points down to defeat St. John’s. He left the locker room intending to make his way to the post-game press conference. There in the hallway an older gentleman in a suit and tie greeted him with a hug and began crying on his shoulder.
Temple wins OT thriller over Wichita State
SAN JUAN – Senior guard Ramone Moore scored six of his team-high 23 points in overtime to lead Temple to a 78-74 OT win over Wichita State in the third place game of the 5-hour Energy Puerto Rico Tip-Off Sunday evening at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico. The Owls improve to 3-1 on the season while the Shockers fall to 2-2.
Moore, who averaged 21.7 points in the Owls’ three games and was named to the all-tournament team, took over for the Cherry and White in the final three minutes and the extra frame. After Wichita State, which trailed by eight (54-46) with 6:58 left in regulation, took a 59-57 lead with 2:49 on the clock, Moore stepped up. First he drained a jumper in traffic to tie the game then he made a nice driving lay-up to put the Owls back on top.
College Chalktalk’s Diary Series: Xavier’s Kareem Richardson
As I began writing my first entry of the new season, I was really contemplating what to write about and then it dawned on me. It was Sunday, the first full day for the clocks to change and fall back one hour. The change of the clocks was very symbolic for me since my last entry. Many things have changed for me personally as well as the world we live in.
The biggest for me personally and for my family has been the transition from Drake University (Des Moines, IA) to Xavier University (Cincinnati, OH). It’s always very difficult leaving great friendships, colleagues, players and, mostly, uprooting my kids to a new area. The three years spent at Drake University were fantastic years. I was blessed to better myself professionally by working with an outstanding head coach, Mark Phelps.
Atlantic 10 Notebook: Is UMass back?…
Derek Kellogg has been here before. A fast start, 3-0, and expectations from a bevy of fans hoping that this is the year that UMass basketball turns a corner and returns to the top half of the Atlantic 10 table.
A year ago, UMass was a tidy 7-0 heading into its match-up with Boston College. A five point loss that night quickly turned into four losses in a row; momentum gone in 40 minutes. UMass was more bad than good the rest of the way, including just an 8-15 mark over its final 23 games, and ended the season with a 15-15 record. The high expectations and good vibes during the fast start were nowhere to be found come March.
