Conference games creating close calls for teams at the top. Should only get more interesting as clubs go on the road.

1. Duke – Snuck past Maryland. Play at Florida State on Wednesday.

2. Ohio State – Happy to get by Minnesota at home. Travel to Michigan.

3. Kansas – Will probably NOT schedule a road game at Michigan in January again.

4. Syracuse – Travel to MSG for a mid-week soiree with the Red Storm. Ooh…ahhh…ooh…ahh

5. San Diego State – UNLV and New Mexico in the same week.

6. Pittsburgh – Will play truth and consequences with a desperate Georgetown team.

7. Villanova – Host Maryland on Saturday.

8. BYU – They are more than Jimmer Fredette. Not that they need to be for now.

9. Kentucky – Should be able to sleep through the week and beat Auburn and LSU.

10. Notre Dame – Can the Irish win on the road at Marquette and St. John’s this week?

11. Purdue – Play at Minnesota and at West Virginia over the next six days.

12. UConn – Win over Texas was not THAT impressive.

13. Missouri – Lost by 13 to Colorado? Colorado? Really?

14. Illinois -Visit Madison over the weekend. That’s always good for an L.

15. Florida – Tough to figure out. Catching a break with the “Pearl-less” Vols this week.

16. Temple – Game versus St. Bonaventure could get interesting.

17. Gonzaga – Seven wins in a row.

18. Butler – On the road at Detroit and Wright State this week.

19. Georgetown – Is it possible to have a must-win game on January 12th?

20. Texas A&M – Welcome to Big 12 play – Okie State and Missouri this week.

21. UCF – Loss AT Houston not too much of a surprise.

22. Georgia – Nice win over Kentucky.

23. Washington – 4-0 in Pac 10 play. Maybe that means something.

24. Oklahoma State – Nice win over a falling K-State team.

25. St. Mary’s – Only losses this season are to San Diego State and BYU.

What does your top 25 look like?

Still skeptical about SanDiego State. Best win this year was mid-Nov vs Gonzaga? Undefeated, but not sure i’d have ’em that high in the poll … maybe 14th but ahead of Mizzou. Agree … lose to Colorado? Please.

Kentucky at #9 a little high, IMO. I’d have Purdue there or maybe up to #7.

Syracuse will handle St John’s at the Garden.

Houston is not very good, so I would say a Top 20 team (UCF) losing to them is indeed a surprise, even on the road.

    That’s my two cents 🙂

In one week, San Diego State beat St.. Mary’s, Wichita State and Cal all by double digits. Cal was on the road.

St. Mary’s hasn’t lost since. The Gaels are 14-2 with wins over St. John’s, Texas Tech and Miss. St. TT and MSU are down, but they are from “major” conferences. St. Mary’s other loss was to BYU by 1.

Wichita State is 13 -3 with a 4-point loss to UConn when Kemba Walker announced his presence in Maui. In fact, the Shockers led that game late as opposed to Michigan State and Kentucky who both lost to the Huskies by double digits. Wichita State has also beaten Virginia and LSU. Wichita’s other loss is to Missouri State by 3. The Bears are also 13-3.

Depending upon where you look SDSU’s RPI is around 6th.

    Happy Birthday Wally !
    Thirty nine again right ???
    🙂

  4. Wally   January 10, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Thanks, Crash. Nope … we started working backwards since hitting 39 … so it should be 31 or so by now. I feel GREAT! (Look like crap, but FEEL GREAT). 🙂

    Casey —
Still think SDSU is a little high on your list … but that’s OK … it’s YOUR list.

If four teams are all “average” and they don’t really play anyone of note, but they do play eachother, and they all have nice winning records, does that make them all very good (or Top 10) ??? Just askin’ … cuz that’s what I suspect with your Holy Trinity of St. Mary’s, BYU, Wichita State and SDSU. (Okay, that’s 4 so I screwed up the naming … shoot me).

  5. Casey   January 10, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Yeah, I know. It’s kinda tricky. The BCS had the same problem with Boise State’s opponents this season.

  6. Wally   January 10, 2011 at 4:30 pm

No they didn’t … the BCS realized that Virginia Tech this year and TCU last January were very good teams … both beaten by Boise State. Of course, all other teams were KILLED by Boise, ‘cept for Nevada, and of course we all know that Brotzman’s FG was actually good. 😉

Ok … so SDSU’s “best win” this year, so far, is over #17 Gonzaga. The next most impressive win is over #25 St Mary’s. If ya wanna hang your hat on that, be my guest. Just remember, they struggled to a 2 point win just before Christmas vs “mighty IUPUI”.

  7. Casey   January 10, 2011 at 4:33 pm

2 point games tend to happen when you play a team twice in a month.

Who is the “all” in the above statement?

  8. Wally   January 10, 2011 at 4:43 pm

Not if one team is great and the other is mediocre ( IUPUI is 9-9 and tied for 3rd in the Summit League. The what???)

Ah …. but 2 point games do happen if one team is decent and the other is mediocre. I suspect SDSU is “decent” …. as opposed to #6 in the friggin country (based on actual data of course). Now, if they happen to beat someone of note, I’ll change my mind. Or, if they beat the snot out of most teams, that may also change my mind. For instance, beating Cal Poly 51-45 is not exactly “one shining moment”.

    All = All y’all.

  9. Casey   January 10, 2011 at 4:48 pm

Oh, because a bunch of us were wondering how long you were going to stay in denial.

  10. Casey   January 10, 2011 at 4:52 pm

You do realize IUPUI played AT Ohio State. Lost by 11. It was a 3-point game with 7:00 remaining.

Yeah and Oakland is in the Summit. I let them know they are not sexy enough for you. Kinda like the Horizon League for most of the country.

  11. Crash   January 10, 2011 at 5:35 pm

    Wally,
    Don’t include me in all, ya’ll !
Brotzman hooked then shanked ! Were you drinkin’ that Smurf blue punch I think…I’m off to LA LA Land tomorrow night. I’ll check in from the floor at the Staples Center Wed.night during Clipper/Heat tilt and again Sunday afternoon at Clipper/Laker affair.

  12. Wally   January 10, 2011 at 5:46 pm

No, Crash … he faded and then hooked. But the fade still landed IN THE FAIRWAY. I’ve sent video of the kick to the FBI-CIA for analysis … they said they’d get right on it after they complete final analysis of something called …. the Zapruder Film?? Ever hear of it? Oh well, they’ve got my number.

See if ya can get some Blake Griffin poster shots to share with the bench. Oh and it would be OK if there was a Kobe one too. 😉

  13. Crash   January 10, 2011 at 6:01 pm

    Wally,
You mean MacGruber ? Anyway I will try to get poster shots of LeBron,DWade Blake Griffin and Kobe…I’ll be so close I hope I don’t do something stupid and end up in LA County Jail…

  14. Crossword Pete   January 10, 2011 at 9:13 pm

In Casey’s defense, SDSU is ranked 6th by AP. He’s not the ONLY one with them high on their list!
