Making his first start in Class AAA, Gage Ziehl looked right at home.
And the former Penfield standout had a chance to work with an MLB All Star.
Ziehl struck out eight without issuing a walk as the Worcester Red Sox defeated Lehigh ValleyPigs, 17-0 on Saturday.
He hurled two-hit ball over five and 2/3 innings for his seventh win overall this season.
The right-hander retired the last eight batters he faced before being lifted after facing 18 batters and throwing 79 pitches. He set down the first two to come to the plate in the sixth inning. Ziehl set down the side in order in the second and fifth. A leadoff single in the third was erased on a double play and another runner, who reached via HBP, was caught stealing second base.
Ziehl allowed one run on six hits and a walk in his last Double-A outing on August 2nd. He was promoted to Worcester on August 4th. He has a record of 7-3 on the season over 18 starts (17 with Portland) with 104 strikeouts and 18 walks over 86.2 innings. The former Miami Hurricane has a WHIP of 1.28.
A fourth round draft pick of the New York Yankees in the 2024 MLB draft, Ziehl was traded to the Chicago White Sox in July of 2025 and then to the Red Sox during the off-season.
Adley Rutschman, on a rehab assignment with Worcester, caught Ziehl on Saturday. Rutschman, a former first overall draft pick by the Baltimore Orioles, was traded to the Red Sox on August 3rd. Rutschman is a three-time MLB All-Star including this year’s midsummer classic.
