Reid VanScoter (Livonia) was named Jamie Moyer Minor League Pitcher of the Year for the Seattle Mariners farm system, the organization announced on Tuesday.
After starting 25 games for Seattle’s High-A affiliate, Everett AquaSox, VanScoter posted a 10-6 record with 157 punchouts and an ERA of 3.27. Of the 25 starts the southpaw made, 13 were quality. His best start came against Eugene on August 10, in which he hurled eight innings allowing three runs on six hits and fanning nine. VanScoter also tallied two double-digit punchout games, including setting a professional-high 12 against Eugene on September 4.
The Livonia native was taken in the fifth round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Coastal Carolina University. Prior to Coastal Carolina, VanScoter was a member of SUNY Binghamton for two seasons.
During his redshirt senior campaign as a Chanticleer, VanScoter hurled 88.2 innings with a 9-4 record and a 3.65 ERA. The southpaw lasted at least six innings in eight of his 16 starts, including hurling eight innings of one-run ball against UT Arlington. VanScoter garnered Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year honors in 2022 as well as being named Second Team All-American.
In high school, VanScoter finished with a record of 31-1, an ERA of 0.40 and struck out 396 batters over 210.2 innings. He helped the Bulldogs to the 2017 NYS Class B title, as well as being named first-team All-State in 2016 as well as ’17.
As a senior, the southpaw went 11-0, allowing just five runs all season and striking out 147 over 70.2 innings. In the 2017 Section V Class B championship game, VanScoter hurled a 21-strikeout no-hitter, tied for second-most strikeouts in a seven-inning game in Section V history.
Everett finished 74-58 and appeared in the Northwest League Championship.
