ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men’s basketball 2023-24 recruiting class has added another major piece with the signing of 6-foot-8 wing Duane Thompson who has committed to join the Bonnies program beginning this summer.
“We are really excited about Duane’s decision to join the Bonnies,” St. Bonaventure head coach Mark Schmidt said. “Duane is an athletic, long wing who has a ton of upside. He can score the basketball and make an impact in a lot of different ways on the court. Duane also knows how to win, winning a national prep championship last season with Putnam Science Academy. He was really well coached and will be well prepared for the college level because of his experience at PSA. We expect Duane to make an impact with the Bonnies next season.”
Thompson joins the Bonnies from a familiar place – Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut – where he reclassified to the Class of 2023 and will have four years of eligibility upon starting his collegiate career.
This past season, Thompson helped guide Putnam to its fourth national prep championship following a 39-3 season. He was ranked as the 10th-best 2024 prospect in New England by the New England Recruiting Report prior to reclassifying.
He averaged seven points, three assists and two steals while shooting over 48 percent from the floor in 15 minutes per game as the Mustangs finished the season on a 21-game winning streak.
Thompson’s recruiting profile was ever increasing as he had already held multiple Atlantic 10 offers while also receiving power conference offers from Creighton, Seton Hall and Virginia Tech.
He will join fellow Putnam Science Academy alum Barry Evans on the Bona roster in the coming season, and continues the lineage of Mustangs becoming Bonnies. Thompson’s PSA teammate Miles Rose, the starting point guard on this year’s prep championship squad, is also committed to join SBU. Former Bona’s standouts Kyle Lofton and Osun Osunniyi each also won prep titles at PSA.
“Both Duane and Miles were playing their best basketball at the end of the season and that really helped us win the title,” PSA head coach Tom Espinosa said of the two new Bonnies.
Bona’s 2023-24 roster continues to look more impressive by the day. In addition to returning their top six scorers from last season, the Bonnies will welcome Thompson and Rose as well as graduate transfer guard Charles Pride and transfer center Noel Brown.
