Luis García, who sustained the Rochester Red Wings’ lineup to a split against Buffalo last week, earned International League Player of the Week honors for his efforts, Minor League Baseball announced on Monday.
García batted .519 (14 of 27) in six games against the Bisons, amassing 25 total bases and scoring nine runs. He culminated what was already a dominant week by doubling and tripling on Sunday, driving in three runs and scoring two more. This is his second Player of the Week honor as a Red Wing.
García’s 20 base hits are currently the most of any professional player at any level of Major/Minor League Baseball. He is batting .377 (20 for 53) in 12 games, with a 1.034 OPS (On base plus slugging percentage).
The Red Wings are 4-0 when García drives in a run and 2-0 when he hits a home run. He ranks second in the International League with 14 runs scored, while standing sixth in batting average.
The 21-year-old shortstop and his Red Wings teammates meet the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in Allentown, Pa. for a six-game series this week before returning home to host the Syracuse Mets at Frontier Field from April 26-May 1.
