The Men’s Room Postseason Preview: Avon and York to battle for spot in regional qualifier

Livingston County Athletic Association rivals meet for the second time this season looking for a spot in Wednesday’s Class C Boys’ Regional Qualifier. Section V Class C3 champion York will face Class C1 champ Avon Monday night at Letchworth High School. Here’s the breakdown:

YORK KNIGHTS (17-6/Livingston County III) vs. AVON BRAVES (20-3/Livingston County II)

Scoring offense: York (66.1 PPG), Avon (58.5 PPG)

Scoring defense: York (52.7 PAPG), Avon (44.8 PAPG)

Current streak: York has won five straight and eight of nine with its only loss during that stretch being a one-point set back at Geneseo. Each of the Knights last eight wins have been by double-digits. Avon brings six consecutive wins into Monday’s tilt (five by double-digits). The Braves have won 14 of their past 15 games.

How they arrived here:  York opened sectionals with an 81-70 victory over No. 5 seed Bolivar-Richburg in the quarterfinals. The Knights knocked off top-seeded Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter School, 70-61 in the semi-finals before beating No. 2 Caledonia-Mumford, 55-42 to claim the Class C3 title. Avon defeated No. 7 Letchworth 54-39 in the C1 quarterfinals and Geneseo, 49-35 in the semifinals. The Braves claimed their third straight sectional title with a 68-43 victory over top-seeded and previously unbeaten, Rochester Academy Charter School.

Last time they met: Avon’s Andrew Rowland finished four rebounds shy of a triple-double with 12 points, 10 assists and six rebounds in the Braves’ 57-51 win over York on December 14th.

York: Maddox Timothy Jr. G (C3 Tournament MVP) 15.3 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 3.0 APG; Jacob Pangrazio So. F/G 14.8 PPG, 6.6 RPG;  Tyler Brady So. F/G 10.8 PPG, 6.0 RPG; Connor Rodwell So. F 6.7 PPG, 5 RPG; Austin Flynn Sr. F 6.5 PPG, 4.6 RPG.

Avon: Zach Colvin Sr. F (C2 Tournament MVP) 17.0 PPG, 10.0 RPG, 3.0 APG; Michael Rowland So. G 8.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 2.0 SPG; Andrew Rowland Sr. G 7.0 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 5.0 APG; Jack Browne Sr. F 7.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG; Hudson Volpe Jr. F 6.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG.

Coaches: Ed Orman, Jr. (York), Rob Fries (Avon)

History 101: This will be the first time the two programs have faced each other in the post-season while Fries and Orman have been head coaches (15 years).

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Far West Regional Qualifier against Class C2 champion Oakfield-Alabama.

A 7:30 p.m. tipoff is scheduled Monday night at Letchworth High School.
