
With sectional championships in the past, teams turn their focus on the state title. The next step in that climb takes place this weekend with five Section V teams taking to the pitch in the New York State Far West Regionals. Here’s the breakdown:
Class D: Friday, Nov. 5, 6 PM at Caledonia-Mumford High School
ELLICOTTVILLE EAGLES (Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association/12-3-0) vs. FILLMORE EAGLES (Allegany County Division I/20-0-0)
How they arrived here: Ellicottville (No. 6 NYSSWA Class D) defeated second-seeded North Collins, 3-1 in the Section VI Class D championship game. Section VI’s Class D consists of three teams. Fillmore (No. 2 NYSSWA Class D) opened sectionals with a 7-0 win over South Seneca before beating Honeoye (4-0), Marion (4-0) and Batavia-Notre Dame (5-0) to clinch a spot in regionals.

History 101: Fillmore clinched a spot in regionals for the first time since back-to-back appearances in 1998-99.
What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class D semi-finals against either Mount Academy (IX) or the Section II champion.
Class C: Saturday, Nov. 6, 2 PM at Caledonia-Mumford High School
FREWSBURG BEARS (Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association/ 17-2-0) vs. BYRON-BERGEN BEES (Genesee County Division I/18-3-0)
How they arrived here: Third-seeded Frewsburg (No. 8 NYSSWA Class C) opened sectionals with a 3-nil victory over league rival Maple Grove and went on to beat Portville (4-0) and Wilson (1-0) to earn a spot in the regionals. Byron-Bergen (No. 9 NYSSWA Class C) opened with an 8-0 win over No. 15 seed Red Jacket in the first round before moving on to beat No. 7 seed Campbell-Savona (2-0), No. 6 seed Bishop Kearney/Chesterton, 5-2, in the semifinals and HAC, 5-1 in the finals. The Bees handed Warsaw its first loss of the season in the regional qualifier.

Trends: Frewsburg’s two losses this season were to Class A1 champion Grand Island and Class AA finalist Clarence. The Bears have won 17 straight games and allowed one goal during that stretch. Byron-Bergen has won six straight and 11 of 12.
What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class C semifinals against the Carle Place (VIII) vs. SS Seward (IX) winner.

Class A: Saturday, Nov. 6, 2 PM at Webster Thomas High School
GRAND ISLAND VIKINGS (Niagara Frontier/17-1-2) VS. SPENCERPORT RANGERS (Monroe County Division II/18-0-1)
How they arrived here: Second-seeded Grand Island (No. 4 NYSSWA Class A) opened sectionals with a 9-1 win over Kenmore West. The Vikings beat Niagara-Wheatfield (2-1) in the Section VI semi-finals and North Tonawanda (3-0) in the finals before besting Iroquois (3-0) in the regional qualifier. Spencerport (No. 3 NYSSWA Class A) opened with an 8-0 win over No. 8 seed Irondequoit in the quarterfinals, defeated No. 4 Our Lady of Mercy in the semifinals, No. 2 Brighton in the Class A1 finals and Pittsford Mendon in the regional qualifier.

History 101: Saturday will mark the fourth time these programs have met in the Far West Regional with Spencerport advancing in each of the previous matchups (2016 by PKs/ 2017 1-nil/2019 2-1).

Class B: Saturday, Nov. 6, 5 PM at Caledonia-Mumford High School
LEWISTON-PORTER (Niagara Frontier 15-1-1) vs. PALMYRA-MACEDON (Finger Lakes East 18-2-0)
How they arrived here: Third-seeded Lewiston-Porter (No. 7 NYSSWA Class B) opened sectionals with 10-0 win over Olean before moving on with victories over East Aurora (3-1) and City Honors (5-0). The Lancers defeated Class B2 champion Roy-Hart (5-1) in the regional qualifier. Palmyra-Macedon (No. 10 NYSSWA Class B) opened the post-season with a 10-0 win over No. 9 seed Greece Odyssey in the quarterfinals, advanced past No. 4 seed Batavia, 5-0, in the semifinals and defeated Hornell, 2-0 in the Class B1 championship game. Pal-Mac beat Bath-Haverling (2-1) to clinch a spot in Saturday’s final eight game.

LANCASTER LEGENDS (Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division I/15-3-0) vs. PENFIELD PATRIOTS (16-1-1/Monroe County Division I/)
How they arrived here: Second-seeded Lancaster (No. 11 NYSSWA Class AA) opened sectionals with a 2-nil win over Williamsville-North before knocking off previously unbeaten Clarence in the sectional finals. Penfield (No. 8 NYSSWA Class AA) opened with a 3-0 win over No. 4 seed Hilton in the semifinals and advanced on PKs after playing to a draw with Fairport in the Class AA finals.
