The Rochester Red Wings were surely eager to hop on the thruway Sunday evening.
Rochester lost five of its six games against Buffalo in a forgettable first trip in two years to Sahlen Field. The Bisons, excited to finally play true home games, outscored the Red Wings 33-11 over the week-long series, capped by a 7-1 victory in front of 4,675 fans on Sunday.
Jake Noll’s solo home run to right ended the Bisons’ bid for their third shutout of the week, but the Red Wings scraped just three hits against Buffalo pitching. Casey Lawrence, who entered the day with an 8.22 ERA, lowered that mark to 6.52 after scattering two hits and striking out seven batters in six innings.
Red Wings starter Luis Reyes completed five innings but found a trouble spot when he loaded the bases in the third, allowing a single to Josh Palacios before hitting Otto Lopez and walking Cavan Biggio. Kevin Smith and Tyler White made Reyes pay with back-to-back RBI singles, scoring the first three runs of the game.
Reyes walked five batsmen, including walking in a run in the fifth.
Rochester scored walks from Derek Dietrich and Ali Castillo in the eighth, sending would-be tying run Blake Swihart to the plate with two outs, but Swihart grounded out to second to end the threat. The Bisons, lifted by escaping the jam, recorded three insurance runs off Nick Wells in the eighth.
Six players in Rochester’s lineup are now batting under .200 with the Red Wings, who have a day off on Monday before hosting 40-46 Lehigh Valley.
