Top 25 Wrap: Rutgers stays undefeated; Marquette rallies to down Creighton

D.J. Carton scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the second half as Marquette erased a nine-point deficit to win for the third time in four games. Carton connected on 3-of-5 from behind the 3-point during the final 20 minutes. The sophomore guard also handed out four assists in the second half including dimes on Greg Elliott‘s game-tying triple, and Theo John‘s dunk that gave Marquette a 56-54 edge. The Golden Eagles’ first lead since an 18-16 advantage less than 10 minutes into the contest.

Carton and Elliott combined to go 6-of-8 from long range in the second half. Overall, the Golden Eagles shot 7-of-9 from distance coming out of the break. Marquette scored on 24 of 34 second-half possessions. Carton shot 6-of-13 for the game. Elliott added 14 points. Dawson Garcia posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Koby McEwen scored 18 points.

Mitch Ballock paced Creighton with 26 points. The senior guard connected on 8-of-14 attempts behind the 3-point arc including 5-of-8 in the first half. The game was the Big East opener for both teams.

Ron Harper Jr. and Myles Johnson highlighted a 10-0 Rutgers run as the Scarlet Knights opened Big Ten conference action with their fifth double-digit win of the season. Leading 40-38, Johnson sparked the run with a dunk. Paul Mulcahy converted one of two free three before Geo Baker hit a jumper. Harper struck from long range and then set up Johnson for another flush. Rutgers led 50-38 and did not Maryland to make it a single-possession game for the remainder of the contest.

Harper finished with a game-high 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor including 5-of-8 from long range. The junior guard grabbed five rebounds and handed out four assists. Johnson added 10 points off the bench to go with a game-high 16 rebounds. Baker had 15 points.

Donta Scott paced Maryland with 20 points.
