After helping St. Bonaventure to two wins last week, freshman point guard Kyle Lofton has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week. It is his second such honor this season.
In wins at Saint Joseph’s and at home against George Mason, Lofton averaged 20 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. He made 50 percent of his shots from the field (13-26) including 8-11 (.727) from three-point range, helping the Bonnies improve to 7-5 in the Atlantic 10.
In the Bonnies’ 76-51 win at Saint Joseph’s on Feb. 12, Lofton scored eight points with two assists and one steal in 29 minutes. Then on Sunday, Lofton scored a career high 32 points to lead St. Bonaventure over third place George Mason, 79-56. He was 7-8 from three-point range, 10-15 from the field overall and 5-5 at the free throw line. Lofton added seven assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Lofton’s perimeter defense was also pivotal in the wins, as the Bonnies held both opponents under 57 points.
For the season, the Pleasantville, N.J., native is averaging 14.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. He leads the A-10 in minutes played at 37.4 per game, and is second among A-10 freshmen in scoring and third in assists.
St. Bonaventure (11-14) will host La Salle this Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m.
