ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Kevin Broderick was named Coach of the Year and junior guard Tyler Stenglein was named Player of the Year recently as the Rochester Chapter of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association selected their Division II-III area all-star teams.
In addition to Stenglein, junior forward Jake Burgio was chosen to the 12-member first team for the men’s teams. For the women, sophomore Rachel Benedict and senior Samantha Peebles were first-team selections.
Stenglein, of Rochester and a graduate of Irondequoit High School, has earned an array of accolades this season after leading the Golden Flyers to a 20-8 overall record, the Empire 8 Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. He was named E8 Player of the Year and earned All-America honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He averaged 19.1 points ans 4.0 assists per game for the season.
Burgio, of Brockport, N.Y. and a graduate of Brockport High School, served as a fine complement to Stenglein as he led the Golden Flyers in rebounding at 8.8 per game and was second in scoring at 16.1 points per game. He also led the team with a .570 shooting percentage. In the Empire 8 Tournament, he scored 26 and 21 points respectively in wins over Alfred and Utica to help Nazareth to the championship.

Broderick, of Fulton, N.Y. and a Nazareth alum, recently completed his ninth season as head coach and reached the 20-win plateau for the first time. He has a 147-90 record for a .620 winning percentage. He and his Nazareth staff were recognized as E8 Staff of the Year.
Benedict and Peebles were the top players on the Golden Flyers’ women’s team. Benedict, of Brockport, averaged 16.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game shot 38.1 percent from three-point range. She was also recognized as a first-team Empire 8 Conference all-star.
Peebles, of Syracuse and a graduate of Westhill High School, was E8 co-Player of the Year after leading the league in scoring at 18.2 points per game. She surpassed 1,000 career points during the season and made 49 three-point baskets.
