ROCHESTER, N.Y. – For the second time in three days the Monroe Community College baseball team dropped a home doubleheader with the Tribunes falling on Saturday to the Niagara County Community College Thunderwolves, 13-5/7-2.
Game two starter, Ryan Marketell (Webster Thomas) retired the first nine batters he faced, but a pair of fielding miscues proved to be the sophomore starter’s undoing. Marketell struck out four and allowed just one ball out of the infield the first time through the order.
The 6-foot-5 right-hander walked three in the fourth but looked like he would escape the jam unscathed when he induced a one-out , bases-loaded ground ball. After getting the force at second, the relay to first ended up in foul territory. Another error on the play, and Niagara County cleared the bases to take a lead they did not surrender at 3-1.
Marketed pitched five and took the loss. He finished with five strike outs on the day.
Brennen Smith (Webster Thomas) singled and scored in the second to give Monroe an early 1-0 edge. The freshman led with a base hit to left field. Anthony May (C.W. Baker/Baldwinsville) worked a walk, and TJ Lucey (Fairport) moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Andrew Czubaj (John F. Kennedy/Buffalo) got MCC on the board with an RBI squeeze bunt.
Lucey singled home Smith in the sixth for Monroe’s other run in the game two loss.
Matt Wagner (Bishop Smith/Pembroke, ONT.) and Phil Ferranti (Webster Schroeder) plated runs on back-to-back two-out hits in a three-run third inning of game one, but Monroe’s defense committed four errors in the contest.
Wagner drove in Logan Martella-Tasick (Penfield) and Cas Sobaszek (Rush-Henrietta) with a double in the left field corner. Ferranti knotted the game at three with an RBI base hit to left field.
Sobaszek doubled and scored on Ferranti’s two-out single in the fifth. The freshman shortstop drove in Jonathan Catapano (McQuaid Jesuit) with a two-out single in the sixth for the Tribunes final run of the game.
Monroe falls to 9-10 on the season.
The Tribunes host Utica College JV on Tuesday. A 1 PM first pitch is scheduled for game one.
