ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A late rally fell short, and an early lead proved not enough. Such was the case for the Monroe Community College baseball team which dropped a pair (6-3/13-9) of games to Erie Community College, Thursday at Tribune Field.
Jonathan Catapano (McQuaid Jesuit) connected on a pair of doubles in the nightcap including an RBI two-bagger that sparked a four-run second inning, but the Tribunes fell to 9-8 on the season. Catapano launched a missile to straight away center that caromed off the fence just to the left of the 400 ft. marker that plated Brennen Smith (Webster Thomas).
After Logan Martella-Tasick (Penfield) moved the runner with a sacrifice bunt, Casimer Sobaszek (Rush-Henrietta) followed with a RBI single through a drawn infield. Justin Bunting (Greece Athena) singled to right, and Phil Ferranti (Webster Schroeder) brought home his team-leading 22nd and 23rd RBI of the season with a double to left field to give MCC a 6-2 advantage.
The lead was short-lived.
Erie CC took advantage three walks, two hit batsmen and a wild pitch to grab a lead they did not surrender in the fourth. Anthony Hernandez highlighted a seven-run frame with a two-out bases-clearing double as the Kats took a 9-6 lead.
The game was eventually called on account of rain in the bottom of the sixth with Ferranti aboard at second.
Hudsen Hagland (Tilton School/Charlestown, NH) plated a run in the first with a double, and TJ Lucey (Fairport) delivered a two-out base knock to knot the game at two after the first inning.
Erie scored a pair of unearned runs in the opener and led 6-1 going into the bottom of the fifth.
Ferranti was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in the opener and finished the day going 3-for-6 with five RBI, two runs scored and two walks.
Matt Wagner (Bishop Smith/Pembroke ONT) scored two runs in game one. He came on in relief in game two and struck out all three batters he faced.
Hagland collected three hits in seven at-bats with two RBI and a run scored.
