ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Junior guard Tyler Stenglein, who led Nazareth to the regular-season Empire 8 Conference title and the top seed for this weekend’s E8 Tournament, has been named E8 Player of the Year for 2017-18. The league’s leading scorer in conference-only games at 20.3 points per game, Stenglein also represented Nazareth as a first-team all-star. He was joined on the first team by Nazareth junior forward Jake Burgio. The all-conference teams were selected through voting by the league’s head coaches.
Nazareth, guided by ninth-year head coach Kevin Broderick, also was recognized as E8 Coaching Staff of the Year after completing the regular season at 18-7 overall with a 13-3 record in conference play. In addition, junior Daniel Jacob was Nazareth’s representative on the Sportsman of the Year team. The Empire 8 emphasizes that “Competing with Honor and Integrity” is an essential component of a student-athlete’s experience in conjunction with an institution’s educational mission. One member of each conference school was selected as having distinguished themselves while consistently exhibiting the traits as an outstanding sportsman.
Stenglein, of Rochester, N.Y. and a graduate of Irondequoit High School, has been a steady performer at both ends of the floor and is the sixth Nazareth player to be honored as E8 Player of the Year, joining Mitch Ford (2015-16), Corey McAdam (2009-10), Jimmy Evans (2002-03), Greg Dunne (1998-99) and Chris Pegan (1997-98). Also a first-team selection in 2016-17,
Burgio, of Brockport, N.Y. and a graduate of Brockport High School, has served as a strong front-court presence for the Golden Flyers in 2017-18 as he ranks among the E8 leaders in scoring (15.4 ppg.), rebounding (8.9 rpg.) and field goal percentage (158-for-268, .590). He has scored in double digits 21 times and reached double digits in rebounds 10 times. He has produced double-doubles (points-rebounds) nine times.
Jacob, of Pittsford, N.Y. and a graduate of Pittsford Mendon High School, emerged late in the season as a reliable scoring threat for the Golden Flyers as he averaged 13.5 points over the last six games, including a career-high 20-point game in a home-court win over Hartwick. He also shot 12-for-25 (.480) from three-point range during that stretch.
Now in his ninth season as Nazareth head coach, Broderick guided the Golden Flyers to the top seed in the E8 Tournament for the first time in their history. In conference-only games in 2017-18, Nazareth led the league in field goal percentage (.489) as well as three-point shooting percentage (.395). Heading into this weekend’s tournament, Broderick has a record of 145-89 (.620) at Nazareth.
