Canisius sophomore Isaiah Reese was named the MAAC Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Reese averaged 18.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game last week as the Golden Griffins went 1-1 in non-league games against Air Force and Youngstown State.
In Canisius’ 104-84 win over Youngstown State Nov. 18, Reese became the first player in school history to record a triple-double after he posted a career-high 23 points and 11 assists, while matching a career best with 11 boards. The Miami, Fla., native is the first NCAA Division I player to record a triple-double this season, and he’s the first MAAC player to reach the feat since Iona’s Scott Machado had a triple-double at Marist Feb. 12, 2012.
In the team’s loss at Air Force Nov. 14, Reese scored 14 points on the power of four makes from 3-point range. Those four treys against the Falcons were a new career high for him. He matched that career number in the win over Youngstown State, the Blue and Gold’s first victory of the 2017-18 campaign.
In two games, where Reese averaged 31.5 minutes per contest, he shot 48.1 percent (13-for-27) from the floor, 53.3 percent from long-range (8-for-15) and went a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. He is the first Canisius player to be named the MAAC Player of the Week since teammate Jermaine Crumpton was honored by the league Jan. 16, 2017.
The Griffs will open a four-game road swing at Tennessee State Nov. 21. Game time in Nashville, Tenn., is set for 8 p.m. Canisius will then travel to Stockton, Calif., Nov. 24-26 to play three games in three days as part of the Men Against Breast Cancer Showcase event.
