ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women’s hockey (4-8-1, 1-4-0 CHA) team fell to Syracuse University (3-7-1, 2-0-1 CHA) by a score of 4-1 Friday evening in a College Hockey America conference contest from the Gene Polisseni Center.
Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) took the loss for RIT with 36 saves. Kathryn Kennedy (Hamilton, Ontario/)had the lone goal for the Tigers off an assist from Brittney Gout (Caledon, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes).
Abbey Miller grabbed the win for Syracuse with 19 saves. Four different players scored for Syracuse. The Orange held a 40-20 edge in shots. Syracuse was 1-for-5 on the power-play, while RIT was 0-for-5.
“It was an odd game start to finish, as I don’t think the score dictated the game” said Bruce B. Bates Women’s Hockey Coach Scott McDonald. “I thought we deserved better than 4-1, we just have to be more consistent in our play and our effort.”
RIT got off to a slow start with only two shots in the first period. Lanteigne kept the Tigers alive with a big save five minutes in to the first keeping it scoreless. Syracuse would jump out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play on goals from Lindsay Eastwood and Kelli Rowswell.
Kennedy scored just under three minutes into the second period off an assist from Gout to cut the Orange lead to 2-1. It was her first goal of the season.
One of RIT’s best chances in the third came from the duo of Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep) and Kandice Sheriff (Brampton, Ontario/) when the Tigers were shorthanded. Rushton sped into the Syracuse zone, maneuvered past her defender to create an opening, and passed back to Sheriff for a point-blank shot that went just high.
With a minute and a half left RIT pulled Lanteigne for the extra skater. Brooke Avery took advantage of the open net and shot from just past the blue line to make it 3-1. Logan Hicks found the back of the net with six seconds left to seal the 4-1 victory for Syracuse.
The Orange now leads the all-time series between the two schools 15-7-2.
RIT will travel down I-90 to Syracuse on Saturday for a 3 p.m. opening faceoff to complete the two day series. RIT and Syracuse also play a home-and-home series on Feb. 9-10, 2018.
