BOSTON – Former Greece Athena Trojan Anthony Lamb – the America East Rookie of the Year last season – was recently named to the 2017-18 Lou Henson Award Watch List, given annually to the nation’s top Division-I mid-major player.
Lamb, a 6-foot-6 forward, led the Vermont Catamounts to an undefeated record in America East play in 2016-17 and a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The sophomore forward averaged team highs of 12.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He was named America East Tournament Most Outstanding Player and earned a spot on the USBWA All-District team.
A two-time Section Five Class A1 Tournament MVP and four-time All Tournament member, Lamb led Greece Athena, under then head coach Jim Johnson, to three straight sectional titles. The Trojans advanced to the 2015 NYSPHSAA Class A title game where they fell to Scotia-Glenville (II), 54-49. Lamb, along with teammates Jay Sarkis and Zac DiSalvo were named to the All-Tournament team.
Lamb netted 15 points and corralled a team-high seven rebounds in Vermont’s season-opening loss to No. 5 Kentucky, 73-69. Lamb connected on five of nine shots from the floor including two of four behind the arc. He also converted three of four free throws.
Vermont will take on Bradley, Friday in the opening round of the inaugural Bahamas Showcase. An 11 a.m. tipoff is scheduled. Vermont will play Marquette on December 5th a game that will be televised on FS1. Lamb will return to the Blue Cross Arena on December 16th when the Catamounts take on St. Bonaventure. A 4 p.m. start time is slated.
The Lou Henson Award Committee consists of 30 members made up of five current D-I head coaches, five retired head coaches, 10 current athletic directors and/or conference administrators, five members of the national media and five CollegeInsider.com staff members.
Eligible players must in the following conferences or leagues: America East, ASUN, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast and Western Athletic.
A mid-season watch list for the award will be released in January. Winners will be announced on March 30 at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Banquet in San Antonio.
