Tyler Austin connected on a three-run home run in the seventh inning, and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders went on to defeat the Rochester Red Wings, 8-4 in International League play at PNC Field, Wednesday night.
Austin’s eighth round-tripper of the year helped Scranton/Wilkes-Barre turn a one-run edge into a five-run cushion.
With the loss, Rochester fell to 77-60. The Red Wings saw their lead in the wild-card race drop two games as Lehigh Valley won at Syracuse 7-4. The Wings have one more game at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before returning home to close the season with four games against Pawtucket. Lehigh Valley ends the season with a four-game set on the road against the RailRiders.
Stephen Gonsalves took the loss for Rochester. In his fifth Triple-A appearance, the left-hander allowed four runs on four hits and two walks over two-thirds of an inning.
The Minnesota Twins Adalberto Mejia surrendered two hits and a walk over three shutout innings in his rehab start.
Niko Goodrum connected on a two-run triple in a three-run sixth as the Wings pulled within one at 4-3. Goodrum also walked and scored in the eighth.
J.B. Shuck finished 2-for-5 on the day.
Anthony Recker collected a hit and an RBI.
Rochester native Cito Culver went 1-for-2 with a run scored for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Domingo German allowed two runs on four hits over five innings for the win.
The teams will finish the series Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. David Hurlbut (98-/3.55 ERA) gets the start for Rochester. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will counter with Chance (11-4/2.63 ERA).
