Mitch Garver connected on 16th home run of the season, but the Rochester Red Wings fell to the Syracuse Chiefs, 9-4 in International League action at NBT Bank Stadium, Saturday night.
Garver connected on a solo shot in the first inning as the Wings took a 2-0 lead.
But it was the last lead Rochester had.
Zach Collier, Brandon Snyder and Neftali Soto led with back-to-back-to-back doubles as Syracuse answered with five tallies in the home half of the frame and never looked back.
Snyder and Soto finished with two hits apiece and a combined three RBI and three runs scored. Michael Almanzar paced Syracuse going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, and Syracuse outhit Rochester 14-11.
Kennys Vargas collected two doubles with an RBI and a run scored for the Wings. Niko Goodrum was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
David Hurlbut fell to 8-6 on the season. The left-hander allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits over three innings. Hurlbut struck out four and walked none.
Rochester committed four errors.
Shawn Kelley tossed a scoreless inning in relief for the win.
Garver leads the Wings with the 16 round-trippers. He is tied for seventh in the league. Lehigh Valley’s Rhys Hoskins leads the way with 27 home runs.
Rochester remained three games back of Lehigh in the IL wild card race. The IronPigs fell at Buffalo 6-4.
Rochester and Syracuse close the four-game set Sunday. Aaron Slegers (12-4) gets the start for Rochester. A 1:05 first pitch is slated.
