The Rochester Red Wings routed the Syracuse Chiefs 9-3 Friday night at Frontier Field.
The Red Wings started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning off Syracuse starter A.J. Cole, taking an early 1-0 lead. After hits by Niko Goodrum and Tommy Field put a man in scoring position, Matt Hague delivered with an RBI single.
Syracuse quickly went ahead in the top of the second inning after three straight hits off Red Wings starter David Hurlbut made it a 2-1 ballgame.
ByungHo Park came through in the bottom of the third inning, hitting a two RBI double and giving Rochester a one run lead. The Red Wings added six more runs in the inning, making the score 9-2. Scoring included back-to-back home runs by Goodrum, his eighth of the season, and Mitch Garver, his ninth of the season. Cole was replaced following Goodrum’s home run.
Cole finished pitching 2.2 innings, allowing eight earned runs on 11 hits, no walks and two strikeouts. He threw 65 pitches – 46 for strikes.
Hurlbut finished his outing pitching four scoreless innings in a row, and was replaced by Alan Busenitz to begin the top of the seventh inning.
The Red Wings starter pitched 6.0 innings, giving up two earned runs on seven hits, two walks and three strikeouts. He threw 94 pitches – 58 for strikes.
John Curtiss came in to relieve Busenitz to begin the top of the eighth inning. Curtiss allowed one run in two innings of work, striking out two.
The series continues Saturday night at 7:05 p.m., on Salute to “Slap Shot” Night featuring an autograph appearance by The Hanson Brothers from the classic hockey comedy, and fireworks after the game.
