ByungHo Park‘s two-out, ninth-inning single scored Zack Granite from second base and the Rochester Red Wings topped the Buffalo Bisons 5-4 Thursday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field.
The Red Wings (42-35) won for the 13th time in their last 15 games after taking four of five from the Bisons (36-44) in the series.
The game began in a delay as Mother Nature was not kind to Rochester in Buffalo this season.
Both starters were sharp early. Chris Heston for the Wings and Brett Oberholtzer for the Bisons put zeros on the board in the first three innings.
Rochester struck first in the fourth inning as Niko Goodrum drove in Mitch Garver and Leonardo Reginatto scored Goodrum and Park with a double for a 3-0 lead. Buffalo responded with three runs in the bottom half to tie the game, highlighted by a Gregorio Petit two-run home run.
The game could have gone much differently had the Red Wings not escaped a jam in the fifth. The Bisons loaded the bases with a double and two walks against Heston. Drew Rucinski, named to the International League All-Star team earlier in the day, got a groundout to end the threat.
Matt Hague and Garver hit back-to-back two-out doubles in the seventh inning off Chris Rowley (0-1) to give Rochester a 4-3 lead. Buffalo responded in the 8th inning against Ryan Pressly (2-0) with a two-out infield single by Jon Berti to tie the game.
Granite opened the ninth inning off Rowley with a bloop single to right. Ehire Adrianza sacrificed Granite to second base. Hague walked and after a pop out, Park delivered with a sharp line drive to that barely scored Granite.
John Curtiss fired a perfect 9th inning with two strikeouts to earn the first Triple-A save of his career.
Granite extended his on-base streak to 29 games while Garver has now hit in a career-high 14 games in a row.
Next Home Game: The Red Wings are home for seven straight games beginning Tuesday, July 4 vs. Pawtucket (Red Sox) at 7:05 p.m. This homestand features the final Bark in the Park of the season, Bull Durham Night featuring Ron Shelton, Salute to Slapshot Night and much, much more.
