The Syracuse Chiefs held off the Rochester Red Wings 8-6 Saturday night at Frontier Field, before a season-high crowd of 12,296. The series and homestand concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. with a Father’s Day celebration that includes a baseball giveaway, an autograph appearance by actor Dwier Brown from the film “Field of Dreams,” and much more.
The Red Wings started the scoring early in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run by Mitch Garver, his fifth of the season, off Syracuse starter Austin Voth, giving Rochester a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse didn’t waste time tying the game at one as Clint Robinson hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning off Rochester starter Yohan Pino. The Chiefs took the lead later in the inning as back-to-back home runs and an RBI single made it a 5-1 ball game. Pino exited after allowing the early runs, and was replaced by D.J. Baxendale with two outs in the top of the second inning.

The Chiefs extended their lead to 8-1 in the top of the fifth inning as a walk and a base hit set up a three-run home run by Brandon Snyder.
Rochester quickly answered after an RBI double and single by Niko Goodrum and J.B. Shuck cut the Red Wings’ deficit to 8-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Voth was replaced by following Shuck’s single. Scoring continued in the inning when Zach Granite hit an RBI single off Rafael Martin. The hit extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Matt Hague contributed a bases-loaded single, still in the fifth inning, scoring two and making it a 8-6 game.
