Fairport 4 Rush-Henrietta 3
Evan Newkirk was hit by a pitch with bases loaded, and the Fairport Red Raiders (9-4/5-1) avenged Wednesday’s loss to reclaim the top spot in Monroe County Division-1. Newkirk forced home Anthony Roides with the game winner, and Faiport held off a late Rush-Henrietta rally.
Trailing 3-0 going into the seventh, the Royal Comets sent nine to the plate and knotted the game at three. Mitch Hoffower led the inning with a solo home run. Chris Reed followed with a double, and one out later Andrew Sanchez made it a one-run game with an RBI two-bagger of his own. AJ Nestler walked, and Lucas Haefner loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Casimer Sobaszek brought home the tying run with a bases-loaded walk.
Tyler Holmes capped a three-run Fairport first with a two-out, two-run home run.
Starting pitchers Mitch Hoffower (R-H) and Trevor Povlock (Fairport) made the difference stand for the next five innings. Hoffower allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits. The left-hander struck out two and walked one.
Povlock fanned six and walked before giving way to Jackson Sullivan with one out and bases loaded in the seventh inning. Sullivan pitched to one batter before Matt Adams came on and retired the side to earn the victory.
Fairport’s Tyler Smith finished 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Sobaszek went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Hoffower was 2-for-3.
Sobaszek finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI to go with two scoreless innings in relief when R-H (9-3/5-2) handed Fairport its first divisional loss (6-3) on Wednesday.
