HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Rome Generals commanded the Genesee Rapids in New York Collegiate Baseball League action Saturday night at the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex. The Generals crossed into Western Division territory and took care of business on the mound that led them to a 5-2 victory.
“Even though tonight was a non-division game, a win is a win. You want to win division games because it’s a loss for someone else in the division,” Rome coach Craig Farley said. “Tonight we just wanted to earn a win.”
Richard Edwards (Edward Waters) hurled seven full innings on just 90 pitches. Edwards allowed zero runs on five hits while recording five strikeouts.
“We had some guys really step up tonight,” Farley said. “We had some of the best pitching we’ve had thus far this summer. Richie pitched really well.”
Defensively Marc DiLeo (Mercyhurst) was busy turning three double plays at second base in addition to a few acrobatic grabs to putout some ground balls.
Sean Trenholm (Binghamton) paced the offense for the Generals with a 3-for-3, two-RBI effort. Marcus Begg (Southern Virginia) was the only other General to record multiple hits on the night with a 2-for-5 showing.
“Sean was hitting .444 heading into the game but doesn’t qualify for any of the leaderboards because he’s only had 30 at-bats after starting late,” Farley added. “We knew what he was capable of so we stuck him in the three hole right in the beginning and he’s been there ever since.
“In your division you get to know a lot about the teams you are playing because you’re playing them four or five times. Coming into this game, we didn’t know much about the Rapids but our guys played really well to get the win.”
Joseph Chapman (Cedarville) and Wes Brown (William Carey) both tallied 2-for-4 from the plate for Genesee.
Allen Murphy (St. John Fisher) will get the loss from the hill for the Rapids after giving up five runs on eight hits and two strikeouts.
The Genesee Rapids continue NYCBL play on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. against the Hornell Dodgers.
Rome will look to snap the longest winning streak in NYCBL history when they host the Western Division-leading, Olean Oilers, Sunday night. The first pitch is slated for 7:05 PM.
