MERION STATION, Pa. – Eighth inning runs broke what had been a tie game and sent Saint Joseph’s to a 4-1 victory on Thursday afternoon in the first of a season-ending three-game Atlantic 10 series for the St. Bonaventure baseball team.
Entering the eighth in a 1-1 deadlock, the Hawks broke through on a bases loaded single through the right side by John Brue. Joe’s ultimately scored three times on the aid of two hits in the inning.
The Hawks improve to 29-19 overall and 15-7 in A-10 play while the Bonnies now stand 24-22-1, 9-13.
Saint Joseph’s got a run across early. Charlie Concannon led off the second inning with a ground-rule double, moving to third one batter later following a sacrifice bunt. A sac fly from Cal Jadacki scored the run for a 1-0 lead.
Bona tied the score up in the fifth when Tommy LaCongo scored from third on a groundball by Tashi Terashima for the tie. The score would remain knotted until the eighth.
Aaron Phillips collected two singles and was the lone Bonnie to record multiple hits. The sophomore also walked, finishing 2-for-3 on the day.
Brandon Schlimm (7-5) pitched into the eighth, allowing three runs on five hits while walking one and striking out four. He allowed just one extra base hit and only two hits through his first six innings of work.
Schlimm finishes his season with the third lowest ERA in Bonnies program history at 2.11, behind only Kyle Johnson’s 2001 ERA of 1.88 and Brian Pellegrini’s 2005 mark of 1.98 (minimum 40 innings pitched). His 94.0 innings and 64 strikeouts on the year also rank fifth and tied for eighth respectively in Bonnies season history.
Lucas Rollins (5-4) got the win for the Hawks with eight innings of one-run ball on the mound.
The Bonnies and Hawks conclude their series on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
