NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – In a series that could potentially determine their postseason fate, the Purple Eagles dropped two close, hard-fought games to the Manhattan Jaspers on Saturday.
Game: Niagara 1, Manhattan 3
The Purple Eagles (15-28-1, 10-10 MAAC) took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning. With Julian Gallup on base, Michael Fuhrman grounded out to short, scoring Gallup and earning an RBI.
The Jaspers (17-27, 8-9 MAAC) tied up the game in the top of the fourth inning and took their first lead, which they would not relinquish, in the top of the sixth.
Zachary Kolodziejski (3-6) struck out eight batters in his 8.0 innings pitched for the Purple Eagles.
Game 2: Niagara 2, Manhattan 3
Manhattan got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles in the first inning. Niagara answered in the bottom of the third.
Kirwer, who went 1-for-2 at the plate and had one stolen base, doubled to center field to send home Joel Brophy, who was already on base. Greg Cullen singled to right center to score Kirwer for the Purple Eagles’ final run of the day. Cullen and Kirwer each earned one RBI.
Cody Eckerson (4-3) pitched a complete game, the first by a Niagara pitcher this season, striking out seven batters in his 7.0 innings pitched.
Niagara closes out its three-game series with Manhattan on Sunday, May 8.
