BROOKLYN — E.C. Matthews led three in double figures as the No. 3-seed Rhode Island Rams defeated the No. 6-seed George Washington Colonials, 71-58 in the quarter-finals of the Atlantic 10 Championship at the Barclays Center, Friday.

Matthews scored 12 of his game-high 21 points in the final minutes of the game as URI pulled away from the Colonials.

“This was a team win and everybody had a part in it,” Matthews said.  “I’m happy we get to play another game and I get to play with these guys.”

Leading by two, the sophomore converted two free throws. Moments later he pushed the lead to nine with a catch-and-shoot three-pointer with the shot clock winding down.

“We’ve been there before we’ve been to a lot of tough games,” Matthews added. “I’ve got good teammates and good coaches, but just keep telling everybody, going to be okay.  They are going to make runs but it’s how we respond and we stay together, and we got stops.”
