Marcus Posley scored 36 points – 12 in the final 2:35 of regulation – to lead St. Bonaventure to a stunning, 100-97 overtime win at Duquesne on Thursday.
The Bonnies trailed by 11 points, 89-78, after Dukes guard Derrick Colter made a free throw with 2:48remaining in regulation. Posley then took over. He made a three-pointer at the 2:35 mark, then converted a traditional three-point play at the 2:08 mark to make it an 89-84 game.
With 1:33 left, Micah Mason made one of two free throws to put the Dukes ahead 90-84. At the other end, Posley again got open and drained another three-pointer to make it a 90-87 game. The Bonnies, who had struggled on defense most of the game, got another must-have stop and called a timeout with 30 seconds left. With the clock down to six seconds, Posley made a contested three-pointer from the left wing that tied the game at 90. Colter’s desperation shot was off the mark and the teams went to overtime.
In the extra session, Duquesne took a 95-93 lead before Andell Cumberbath made a three-pointer to give St. Bonaventure a 96-95 lead with 56 seconds left. The lead again swung back as Duquesne’s Jordan Stevens made a jumper that put the Dukes up 97-96 with 41 seconds to play.
After a timeout, freshman Jaylen Adams then drove into the lane and calmly made a pull-up jumper with 20 seconds left to put the Bonnies back in front 98-97. Ndoye blocked a Mason layup at the other end and Adams snagged the rebound and was fouled. Adams made two free throws with eight seconds left to make it a 100-97 lead. Stevens got off a long three-pointer to try and tie the game but it was well off the mark and the Bonnies pulled out the win.
The come-from-behind win was St. Bonaventure’s third in row and put the Bonnies at 4-2 in A-10 play, 11-6 overall.
Posley’s 36 points are the most scored in an A-10 game this season and tied for the fifth-most in Palumbo Center history. Adams’ 14 assists tied the school record and set a Palumbo Center record.
