HORNELL, NY — The Hornell Dodgers swept a Sunday twinbill from the Niagara Power in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Maple City Park. They won the opener 5-2 and the nightcap 10-1 to improve to 14-13 on the year. The wins propelled the Dodgers over the .500 mark for the first time on the season and puts Hornell in fourth place as the NYCBL breaks for the All-Star game.
In the opener the Dodgers scored two in the first and three in the third to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Anthony Renz (Mansfield) connected on an RBI single and Steven Goldsten (Stony Brook) drove home a run with a bunt single. Spencer Scorza (Monroe CC) connected on a two-run single in the third and then came around to score on a Jake Kenney (Genesee CC) RBI single.
Niagara’s Jimmy Landes (Baylor) connected on a solo homer in the fourth and Cameron Wilkie (Brown) singled home a run in the seventh.
Renz led the Dodgers with a 3-for-3, one RBI day while Goldstein was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Chris Jansen (St. Joseph’s – IN) improved to 5-0 on the year with six innings of five hit ball. He allowed one earned run while striking out two. Newcomer Eric Schell (Penn State Greater Alleghany) got the final three outs.
Wilkie was 2-for-3 with a RBI for Niagara while Ben Pickard (Delta St.) was 2-for-3.
In the nightcap, the Dodgers once again got on the board with two runs in the first inning. Aaron Haag (Southeast Louisiana) doubled home a run and Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown CC) hit a sacrifice fly.
Niagara cut the lead in half with an RBI single by Matt Brooks (Hanover) in the fifth, but the Dodgers responded with seven runs in their half. Hornell sent 12 batters to the plate collecting seven runs on on five hits. Jordan Wheaton (Alfred State) had an RBI groundout, Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher) and Sean McCracken (Southern Nevada) singled home runs, and Renz drove in two with a two-out single.
Max Franzone (Finger Lakes CC) added an insurace run when he laced a single to score Michael Simmons (Montevallo) in the sixth.
Haag finished the contest 3-for-4 with an RBI, Franzone was 2-for-2 with an RBI, Roder was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and McCracken was 2-for-5. Simmons also collected two hits and Renz drove in two.
Stephen Stoklosa (Monroe CC) earned his first win of the season with five innings of work. He allowed nine hits, one earned run, and one walk while striking out two.
Landes led the Power with a 3-for-4 game while Hunter Lewis was 2-for-3. Pickard finished the nightcap 2-for-4.
Hornell has two days off for the NYCBL All-Star game. Five Dodgers will represent the organization in the annual event to be played at Geneva’s McDonough Park. Renz, Haag, Dunn, McCracken, and Jimmy Gutowski (Monroe CC) were named All-Stars.
