ROCHESTER, NY – On a blustery afternoon in Western New York the bats of Monroe Community College proved blistering hot.
Vinny Bomasuto (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) and Spencer Scorza (Penfield, NY/ Penfield) led the way as the MCC Tribunes (25-9/5-1) took two (11-1/15-5) from the Alfred State Pioneers (7-24/3-3) in NJCAA action at Tribunes Field.
Scorza’s three-run blast highlighted a six-run first, and the nation’s no. 14 team was off and running and never looked back.
“I was just trying to stay back and up the middle,” Scorza said of his home run. “With runners in scoring position, I was trying to get the ball in play.”
Scorza plated Bomasuto and Brad Kaczka (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) with his fourth home run of the season.
Monroe put single runs on the board in the second and fourth, two in the third before Bomasuto pushed across the game-winner with a single scoring Brett Sanders (Greece, NY/Greece Olympia) in the fifth as MCC took the decision by run rule.
Bomasuto went 6-8 on the day. The nation’s leader in triples slapped two more three-baggers to increase his total to 16. The sophomore outfielder tripled in the fourth and came home on Scorza’s sacrifice fly.
“I’m seeing the ball really well right now,” Bomasuto commented. “I’m just trying to go up to the plate and do my job.”
Angel Diaz (Humacao, PR/Geneva) went 3-3 in the first game and doubled home Kaczka in the second stanza.
Angel Rosario (Bridgeport, CT/ Bullard Havens) also had three hits in three trips and drove home Danny Mendick (Pittsford, NY/ Pittsford Mendon) in the third.
Not to be content, the Tribunes banged out 15 hits in the nightcap for their ninth win in a row.
“You got to make a statement,” Scorza said. “You try to have the same approach every game no matter who you’re playing. Intensity through seven and staying focused the whole way.”
Mendick’s bases loaded triple brought home Scorza, AJ Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) and Jake Shattuck (Penfield, NY/ Penfield) as the Tribs took a 6-1 in the first.
Kaczka sparked a five-run fourth with a two-run shot scoring Rayshelon Carolina (Willemstad, Curacao/St. Jozef Secondary). Bomasuto followed and walked, stole two bases and scored on a passed ball. Scorza walked and came home when Shattuck’s ground ball was mishandled. Jalen Dennis (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) walked and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Kehlenbeck.
Bomasuto tripled and scored on Shattuck’s triple in the fifth.
Rosario and Kaczka had RBI base hits in the sixth to end the nightcap.
Cass Roberts (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) worked four innings for the win.
Kyle McKay (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) tossed a pair of scoreless frames to close the game. The right-hander faced one more than the minimum.
Jimmy Gutowski (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) struck out four and walked none in three complete to win the opener. He is 4-1 on the season.
Steve Stoklosa (Victor, NY/McQuaid) hurled a pair of scoreless stanzas.
Bomasuto scored five runs, stole two bases and drove in one. He leads the Tribunes in batting average (.482), on-base percentage (.533), slugging (.886) and extra-base hits (28).
Kaczka finished 4-7 with a walk, four runs scored and three RBI.
Scorza had three hits in five trips with a walk, six RBI and three runs scored.
