Dillard, Duren, Dunham share weekly honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Dayton senior Kevin Dillard and La Salle junior Tyreek Duren its men’s basketball Co-Players of the Week.  The league also named Butler freshman Kellen Dunham its Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday for games played during the week of Dec. 3-9.

Dillard was also named ESPN.com’s national player of the week after averaging 20.0 points and 5.0 assists in leading UD to wins at Alabama and Miami (Ohio). The guard from Chicago also shot .417 (5-of-12) from 3-point range and .917 (11-of-12) at the line. Dillard scored a career-high 25 points at Alabama along with four rebounds and six assists. He was 4-for-4 from the line in the last two minutes of the win in Tuscaloosa to help hold off the Crimson Tide comeback. He is now 10-for-10 from the charity stripe in the last two minutes this season.

Duren scored a career-high 29 points in La Salle’s 82-57 victory over Penn State last Wednesday. The Philadelphia native added 12 points, all in the econd half in a narrow win at Northeastern, including a fadeaway jumper with 1.2 seconds left to break a tie and give La Salle a 66-64 road win. The guard totaled seven assists and five steals for the week, shot .565 (13-of-23) from the field and was nearly perfect at the line, shooting .909 (10-of-11) in the two Explorer victories.

Dillard named ESPN.com National Player of the Week

University of Dayton senior point guard Kevin Dillard has been named ESPN.com’s National Player of the Week after leading UD to a pair of big wins at Alabama and at home against Miami.  Dillard averaged 20.0 points a game for the week.

49ers remain perfect with 78-66 win over CMU

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –  Behind three double-figure scorers, the Charlotte 49ers (9-0) defeated the Central Michigan Chippewas (4-4), 78-66, in Halton Arena to remain undefeated. The 49ers nine-game winning streak is tied for the sixth longest in school history.

Daniels, Graham lead VCU past Old Dominion, 83-70 

The sharp-shooting of Troy Daniels and the relentlessness of Treveon Graham led the Rams to a decisive 83-70 road victory over long-time rival, Old Dominion on Friday night. The duo combined for 47 points and 10 rebounds to spark VCU’s third straight victory in the heated rivalry with the Monarchs. Daniels tied a school record with eight three-pointers in the contest.

St. Bonaventure shuts down Siena for Franciscan Cup win  ST. Bona defense leads to victory over Siena

St. Bonaventure may have the talent to score at will prompting cheers from the fans in the Reilly Center but in last night’s game against Siena, all they heard was the clank of the rim.

Musketeers hold off Kent State, 62-55 

CINCINNATI – The Xavier Musketeers bounce back with a 62-55 victory over the Kent State Golden Flashes Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center. Semaj Christon led the Musketeers with 18 points from 6-of-13 shooting from the field.

Xavier quickly responds from the loss to Vanderbilt and improves its record to 7-2 while Kent State even ups its record at 5-5. This was the Musketeers seventh consecutive win over Kent State, and now holds a 13-4 edge in the all-time series record. Xavier has won ten of its last 11 games against teams from the Mid-American Conference, including three against the Golden Flashes.

Dillard, Benson help Flyers roll the Tide, 81-76

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Kevin Dillard scored 17 of his career-high 25 points in the first half to help the Dayton Flyers pull off a road win against the Alabama Crimson Tide, 81-76.

Josh Benson had 19 points and six rebounds as the Flyers improved to 6-2 overall and won five of its last six.

UD is also 19-8 against power conference programs and 7-3 under head coach Archie Miller. The Flyers have also won their seven straight against SEC opponents.

Richmond outdoes Dukes in OT

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Junior Cedrick Lindsay had a double-double with 13 points and 11 assists and made big play after big play down down the stretch to lead the Richmond men’s basketball team to an 83-82 overtime win at James Madison Saturday.

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Cedrick Lindsayscored a game-high 19 points as Richmond handed Old Dominion its worst loss in the 10-year history of the Constant Center, 80-53 Tuesday night on a game televised nationally on the NBC Sports Network.

 Duren’s fadeaway leads La Salle past Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Tyreek Duren hit a fade-away jumper with 1.2 seconds remaining to break a tie game and give visiting La Salle a 66-64 win at Northeastern on Saturday night at Matthews Arena. Duren scored all 12 of his points in the second half and provided late-game heroics for the second time in as many weeks.

Senior Ramon Galloway scored 24 points, 19 of which came in the first half, and shot 9-for-18 from the field. Sophomore Jerrell Wright had 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting.

Jesse Morgan’s late shooting streaks UMass past Northeastern

BOSTON – Jesse Morgan scored 12 of his 18 points in the final seven minutes of play as the UMass basketball team overcame a late second-half deficit to defeat Northeastern 72-66 on Tuesday evening at Matthews Arena. After Morgan’s fourth three-pointer of the game tied the game 62-62 with just over three minutes to go, the Minutemen received timely baskets from Chaz Williams and Sampson Carter before hitting six consecutive free throws to seal the win.

Torrid second half catapults Temple past Villanova

VILLANOVA— Temple continued its undefeated start to the 2012-13 season with a 76-61, win over the Villanova Wildcats (4-4) on Wednesday evening at The Pavilion.  The Owls, who improved to 6-0 on the year, beat their Philadelphia Big 5 rival out on the Main Line for the first time since 1990. The win over Villanova on Wednesday night also marks the first time since 1987-88 that the Owls have won the annual contest in consecutive seasons.

Ryan Canty shows promise, experiences growing pains

In the absence of Chris Gaston, Fordham has gotten production from an unlikely source.

When Gaston went down with a knee injury last month, the Rams’ frontcourt looked to be a weakness, but with the emergence of Ryan Canty, Fordham has weathered the storm.

Canty, who had his breakout game last month against Manhattan, has been one of the few bright spots for a Fordham team that is struggling to find its way this season. With his 15-point, 16-rebound effort against St. John’s last night, Canty recorded his first double-double and has scored in double figures for four straight games.

Flyers continue to prosper against BCS teams

DAYTON —

When Dayton beats a school from one of the six power conferences, the media covering the vanquished team are often taken aback, wondering how a squad from the Atlantic 10 with its mid-major label could knock off one of the big boys.

The subject came up again after the Flyers put on a dominant display in winning at Alabama, 81-76, on Wednesday. UD coach Archie Miller was asked about his 7-3 record against the BCS in two seasons, and he responded by suggesting the college basketball world needs to have a greater appreciation for the caliber of play in the A-10.
