The Atlantic 10 and Big 12 clash for a spot in the Southwest Regional final.
Richmond is making its second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and the 9th in school history, all coming in the last 27 years. This is the Spiders 2nd time making back-to-back NCAA appearances (1990-91). This is Richmond’s 4th-straight postseason appearance and 18th overall. The Spiders are the only team in NCAA Tournament history
to win as a No. 12, 13, 14 and 15 seeds and have the most wins as a No. 12 seed and lower (8) in NCAA Tournament history. Richmond defeated Indiana and Georgia Tech to reach its other Sweet 16 in 1988.
The Jayhawks’ 40 NCAA Tournament appearances are fourth nationally behind only Kentucky (51), UCLA (42) and North Carolina (42). Kansas’s 22-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, from 1990-2010, is the nation’s longest active streak and ranks second-best all time. North Carolina had 27 straight from 1975-2001. Kansas is making its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the Alamodome in San Antonio. KU lost to Bill Self’s Illinois team 80-64 in the Sweet 16 of the 2001 NCAA tourney and won the 2008 NCAA National Championship in the Alamodome under Self, defeating North Carolina 84-66 and Memphis 75-68 in overtime.
