WILLIAMSON, N.Y. — Two days after handing the top-ranked team in the state its first loss of the season, Williamson boys’ soccer was back on the pitch looking to keep pace in the Wayne County League.

And the Marauders didn’t waste any time.

Brendon Burns netted a pair of goals while Jaxon VanLare and Spencer Blauvelt also found the back of the net to lead Williamson (7-2-1) past Sodus (4-6-0), 4-1.

“That was a special win,” said Williamson head coach Al Ferland. “The boys came out with a lot of energy.”

VanLare opened the scoring in the match’s ninth minute.

Jason Champagne set up the play. Champagne took possession along the right outside third and cut across the field before laying off to VanLare who took one touch before finishing between a pair of Sodus defenders.

Burns doubled the score off a cross from Joe VanLare with less than 17 minutes remaining in the half.

“After that first goal, it’s gets the whole team excited,” Burns said. “It just really helps.”

Burns took advantage of a giveaway just outside the Sodus 18-yard box a to give Williamson a 3-nil lead heading into halftime.

“We just gotta keep pushing,” Burns said. “At halftime, we kept trying to keep bringing up the team, tell the bench to get loud, keep bringing up the energy, you know? It’s just a team effort.”

The win was the fourth straight for Williamson who has outscored opponents by a combined total of 7-1 during the recent stretch.

The Marauders backline of Cooper Brandt, Eli Hillegeer, Charlie Walter and Mikey Ishler along with Andrew Petrosky at central defensive midfield did not allow a shot on frame during the first half.

“We do this as a team, defensively,” Ferland said. “You can’t do it individually. So when someone breaks down, it’s pressure, cover, balance, if you will. Get the pressure from the first defender, and then there’s a second defender. We really emphasize that a lot.”

Spencer Blauvelt converted a penalty kick with 1:09 remaining in the game for Williamson’s fourth goal.

Carter Salerno scored the lone Sodus goal.

Sodus keeper Alexander Rodriguez made six saves.

Williamson defeated East Rochester (No. 1 NYSSWA Class C) on Monday. The two teams are tied atop the Wayne County standings with one loss apiece in league play.

Williamson hosts C.G. Finney on Thursday for a 6:45 PM kickoff.

Sodus welcomes North Rose-Wolcott for a 6:45 PM game on Friday.
