AVON, N.Y — Mark Beebe’s goal in the 48th minute was the difference as the Haverling Rams (9-2-0) edged host Avon (7-2-0) in Livingston County Athletic Association Division II action, Monday night.
Beebe redirected a cross from Cal Hill for his second goal of the season.
“I was sitting back post thinking, you better cross it,” he said with a smile. “Skip’s right across and I just lay it right in.”
The play started in the right corner where Hill received a throw-in and slipped past a defender to get space along the end line to deliver the service.
“After I beat the guy, I thought that I could sneak it across,” Hill said. “I saw some guys in the middle. I hit it on the perfect part of the foot, and it just hovered in there, right to Mark.”

The assist was the 16th on the year for the eighth-grader.
“Usually, he’ll try to work it along the end line and get us a corner kick,” said Haverling head coach Matt Hill. “He just whipped that ball in there. I thought, for sure, it was gonna go out of bounds. He sent it across the goalie’s space, and Mark got it on his leg.”
The goal came after the Rams were denied despite five shots on target during the first half including a corner kick sequence with back-to-back attempts.
“In a game like this, if you get one and they don’t get anything, you got to be happy,” the elder Hill said. “I am not going to complain about it. I wish we did finish those in the first half. Might have made things a little easier, but we just didn’t do it. We had it right there on the doorstep.”
Lukas Wightman made three saves for the shutout – Haverling’s sixth clean sheet. This coming after a 3-2 loss to Geneseo on Saturday.
“We were a little more focused today on defense,” Hill said. “We didn’t really miss a whole lot back there and did a nice job.”
Haverling (No. 16 NYSSWA Class B) grabbed top spot in the division.
“That’s a big game with league implications,” Hill said. “We’re in Division II with these guys. They hadn’t lost any, and we hadn’t lost any league games.”
Avon’s Jack Devito made five saves.
The Riverhawks (No. 7 NYSSWA Class C) opened the season with seven straight wins including a 2-nil victory over Livonia (No. 3 NYSSWA Class B) last Monday. They dropped a 1-nil decision to Geneseo two days later.
Avon will host Pavilion/York for a 7 PM game on Thursday.
Haverling will welcome Dansville for a 6:30 PM start also on Thursday.
