HILTON — Trevor Scoppa found the back of the net twice including a goal in the opening minute, and the Fairport (2-2-0) defense posted its first shutout of the season in the Red Raiders’ 3-nil win over host Hilton (3-2-0),Tuesday night.
Scoppa caught the Cadets’ backline off-guard and stole a pass to go in 1-v-1 on Damian Wojtowicz. The senior forward beat the Hilton keeper for a 1-nil lead :32 seconds into the match.
A lead Fairport did not surrender.
Scoppa’s next goal came less five minutes into the second half. He one-timed a pass from teammate Blake Aughtry to double the advantage.
“He’s hard to defend,” said head coach Bill Teasdale. “He’s a handful. He’s quick, he works hard, and he can strike a ball.”
The play started on the outside third along the left sideline. Brock Stephany took a pass from Drew Burton and beat a defender before serving a cross opposite.
Aughtry, along the end line inside the 18, redirected the ball to Scoppa running inside post. He scored from just outside the 6-yard box.
“He’s a dangerous player,” Teasdale said. “He delivered tonight.”
Scoppa helped create Fairport’s third goal. His pressure on the ball created a giveaway that he distributed to Francesco Maniscalco running along the right flank.
Maniscalco played a ball-back to Aughtry who scored on a one-timer.
“We only have two returning starters,” Teasdale said referring to last year’s team that reached the state finals for a second straight year. “It takes time, and we’re figuring it out, but these guys, they get along well together, They’re all working hard, and, you know, our approach is, we just try to get better and better every day.”
Jared Mulley made four saves, all in the second half, behind the Fairport defense of Burton, Ryan Balsamo, William Dziedzic and Griffin Huff to register Fairport’s first shutout of the season.
“That’s the goal,” Teasdale said of the clean sheet. “We work hard to prepare these guys. They’re working hard, and, you know, again, our approach is every day. Every player looks to get better, individually and as a team.”
Fairport travels to Rush-Henrietta for a 5 PM start on Thursday. Hilton heads to Victor for a 7 PM game on Thursday.
