BRIGHTON, N.Y. — A late-inning rally in Game 2 fell short, and Monroe Community College Baseball settled for a doubleheader split (7-3/8-4) with Lackawanna College, Wednesday at Tribune Field.
Michael Sardou (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) plated Braedon Reina (Rochester, N.Y/Churchville-Chili) with a triple to right center and scored on a two-out infield single from Jadon Wanat (East Amherst, N.Y/Williamsville North) as MCC pulled within two at 6-4 in the fifth inning.
The Tribunes didn’t get any closer, and fell to Lackawanna (10-19), 8-4 in the night cap.
Trailing 6-0, Aidan Gallagher (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay East Fishkill) started the rally with a one-out walk. Gallagher stole second and scored on a Thomas Woodridge (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) single.
Woodridge eventually came home on a passed ball.
Monroe went in order in the sixth, and Sardou reached on a two-out double in the seventh before the Tribunes’ come-from behind effort was short-circuited.
Despite issuing a season-high in walks, Miguel Matos (Rochester, N.Y./East High) improved to 3-0 as MCC (14-6) took Game 1, 7-3.
Matos struck out seven and allowed three runs (two earned) over 4.1 innings.
“In spite of Miguel’s battles with the strike zone, I thought his competitiveness was excellent,” said MCC head coach Dave Brust. “I just thought he found a way to get that win.”
Matos, who walked eight batters, left four on base through the first four innings.
“Miguel has shown that he can carry the load for us,” Brust added.
Monroe scored four runs in the first, one in the second and two more in the third.
Gallagher led the first with a double and later scored on a wild pitch. Woodridge reached on an inning single and eventually came home when Braedon Reina singled to right center.
Reina stole a pair of bases and scored on a throwing error.
Tyler Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) walked and crossed home with the fourth run of the inning.
Woodridge finished 2-for-3 in Game 1 and scored twice.
Aaron Reina (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) singled and scored.
Zane Barron (Ormond Beach, FL/Seabreeze) walked twice and came home once.
Sardou drove in a run with a base hit.
Monroe finished up a 12-game stretch at home with a 10-2 record in those games. The Tribunes committed three errors over the 84 innings at home including one fielding miscue made in the last 66 innings.
Monroe heads to Mohawk Valley Community College for a doubleheader on Thursday (April 9th) and a twinbill at Onondaga CC on Saturday, April 11th.
