Melvin Council Jr. poured in nine 3-pointers as part of a 36-point effort (both NCAA Division I career highs) to lead No. 19 Kansas past host North Carolina State, 77-76 in overtime on Saturday.
Council connected three times from distance and scored the Jayhawks’ last 13 points in regulation.
The senior guard also had seven rebounds, four assists and one steal on the night.
The former UPrep and Greece Athena star had hit a total of five 3-pointers in the Jayhawks’ previous 10 games before connecting on his fifth triple of the night with 14:42 remaining in the second half.
He went 13-of-27 from the floor and 9-of-15 from behind the arc.
Council’s previous Division I career-high of 25 came when he was a member of the Wagner College team that beat Long Island University, 72-57 on February 25th of 2024. He scored 28 in Wagner’s win over Division III Gwynedd Mercy.
Council led Wagner to the program’s first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2024.
He played with St. Bonaventure in 2024-25 before transferring to Kansas.
