One did it with his arm. The other used his bat and glove.
Twin brothers, Cosgrove Zeiser (Victor, N.Y./Victor HS) and Parker Zeiser (Victor, N.Y./Victor HS) combined as Monroe Community College took the opening game of a doubleheader, 14-0 on Tuesday at Onondaga Community College.
Cosgrove Zeiser hurled a two-hit shutout, and Parker Zeiser capped a six-run third with his first home run of the season as the Tribunes defeated their hosts 14-0 in Game 1.
The freshman right-hander struck out eight without issuing a walk over five innings of a run-rule shortened game. He allowed two hits to register his first win in his third appearance on the mound this season.
“His breaking ball has really been impressive,” said MCC head coach, Dave Brust. “As soon as he solves fastball command, he is going to be an outstanding college pitcher.”
After surrendering a two-out walk in the first, he retired five straight and seven of the next eight batters faced as part of his longest outing so far this season.
“His curve ball is as good as it gets; even when he pitched in Arizona, those batters had a hard time with his curve ball,” Brust said referring to Zeiser’s four innings of work against Arizona Christian. “What caught up to him in Arizona was ultimately his fastball. Hitters in Arizona, they’re a lot more sophisticated, they have a lot more control of the zone. The strike zones were a lot tighter too, and the hitters are used to that. He was ball one too much. With high-level hitters that’s going to be a problem.”
With Parker behind the plate calling pitches for his brother, Brust doesn’t have to get involved too often.
“They get on each other,” Brust said. “That’s good because that means I don’t have to. It’s fun watching them work together. They are certainly talented. There is a connection when they are the battery.”
Monroe sent 10 to the plate in the third inning. Tobey Wright (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) and Braedon Reina (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) connected on back-to-back, one-out singles to spark the outburst. After Miguel Matos (Rochester, N.Y./East High) reached on fielder’s choice to load the bases, Paul Fiene (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem HS North) and Jadon Wanat (East Amherst, N.Y./ Williamsville North) worked back-to-back, bases-loaded walks to start the scoring.
Michael Sardou (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) brought in another run with a sacrifice fly, and Parker Zeiser followed with a home run to left field.
Monroe added a run in the fourth and seven more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Wright finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Reina went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Matos doubled as part of a 2-for-4 effort with two RBI and two runs scored.
Wanat also doubled and went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Fiene singled and scored twice. Matthews Glasspool (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum Senior HS) walked and had an RBI. Sam Ebbs (Ottawa, ON/Nepean HS) scored a run.
The win was the sixth straight for Monroe.
The Tribunes (6-6) fell 11-7 in the nightcap.
Wanat was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Sardou doubled and went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Ebbs doubled, drove in two runs and also scored. Jack Duggan (Georgetown, ON/Georgetown District) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Wright singled and scored. Reina walked twice and crossed home once. Matos walked and had an RBI.
