Two more athletes with Rochester ties- pole vaulter Brynn King and runner Lanae-Tava Thomas- saw their individual Paris Olympics come to an end on Monday. However, Thomas may continue as part of a relay team.
First, Roberts Wesleyan University’s Brynn King, who came to the Rochester area to train for two-time Olympic medalist Jenn Suhr, fell just short in the pole vault qualifying round.
The Texan reached a height of 4.40 meters but then missed three times trying to reach 4.55 meters. While 4.40 meters matched the mark of the competitors who advanced, she had missed the first jump at the height, causing her to fall out of qualification contention.
Later in the day, Rush-Henrietta alumni Lanae-Tava Thomas—running in the 200-meter dash for her birth nation of Jamaica—placed 18th in the event’s semifinals, finishing her run in 22.77 seconds, 0.91 seconds behind American leader Gabby Thomas and 0.41 seconds from advancing to the final.
Although her individual Olympics are over, Thomas may still be part of Jamaica’s 4×400 relay team. That event’s heats start on Friday, August 9, at 4:40 A.M. online (with a valid TV subscription), on Peacock, and on USA Network. They’ll be shown again during the daytime NBC coverage.
