Pittsford Sutherland’s Paul Byrne garnered Tournament MVP honors for the second time in his career. Wellsville’s Tyler Vogel registered his name in the record book. The pair were two of seven MVP recipients from the 2024 Section V Baseball Tournament.
Byrne struck out 10 in a complete-game effort as Pittsford Sutherland avenged a loss in last year’s A2 final with an 8-4 victory over Honeoye Falls-Lima in Class A. The championship was a Section V-best 16th in program history. The senior right-hander and SUNY Cortland commit allowed seven hits and improved his personal record to 7-2 on the season. The win was the 20th in his career – tops on Sutherland’s all-time list. As a sophomore, Byrne fanned six in Sutherland’s 7-3 win over Greece Athena in the A2 final.
Vogel won a battle of no-hitters as Wellsville defeated Notre Dame-Batavia, 1-0 for the Class B crown. The championship was the 15th in the Lions’ history. Vogel struck out nine, walked one and faced three batters over the minimum. Monroe CC commit Jaden Sherwood hurled a no-hitter for ND-B. The combined near-perfection efforts in the same championship game are believed to be a first in Section V history.
